I’m a pharmacy growth nerd.
I’ve built businesses, consulted for pharmacies across the country, and helped owners take control of their profitability. If there’s a goal that can help your pharmacy thrive, you better believe I’m all over it.
Because goals are the fastest way to bridge the gap between where your pharmacy is today and where you want it to be tomorrow. And when you set the right goals, 2025 could be the year you finally break free from PBM madness, build a loyal patient base, and boost your pharmacy profits.
But have you actually thought about what you want? It’s still March—the year is fresh, and the possibilities are endless! A year from now, what will future-you be grateful you started working on today?
If you’re not sure yet, no worries—goals aren’t just a January thing; they’re a year-round strategy. But when you do set them, make sure you use these four tricks to ensure success. I use them in my own business, and they work wonders for pharmacies looking to grow.
Pharmacy Growth Trick 1 – Use the ‘Good, Better, Best’ Goal-Setting Strategy
Old-school goal setting says to pick a single target and go all-in. But that’s setting yourself up for frustration—especially when outside factors (DIR fees, staffing shortages, FDA, etc.) are beyond your control.
Instead, I use a Good, Better, Best approach. It gives you three finish lines: one you’re confident you’ll hit, one that pushes you, and one that feels like a home run.
For example, if your goal is to grow your immunization program, don’t just say, “I want to do more vaccines.” Instead, set three tiers:
- Good: Administer 500 vaccines in 2025.
- Better: Hit 750 vaccines by Q4.
- Best: Crush it with 1,000+ vaccines and become the go-to immunization hub in town.
Three targets = three chances to win. No more all-or-nothing thinking!
Pharmacy Growth Trick 2 – Make It Memorable (So You Actually Follow Through)
Here’s the deal—if you can’t remember your goal, you won’t achieve it. You need something that sticks.
I tell pharmacy owners all the time to treat their business like a brand. Give your goals a theme, a name, or a number that makes them stand out. Instead of just “more OTC sales,” why not name it “Operation PBM Escape” and rally your team around it?
One of my favorite examples is from a friend who wanted to declutter her house. She didn’t just say, “I’ll get rid of stuff.” She weighed everything she tossed and called it “The House Diet”—tracking pounds of junk like a weight-loss journey. It became a fun game that everyone in the family joined in to ensure it succeeded. Genius!
What’s your version of that idea? Maybe you want to launch a supplement program to boost cash sales. Call it “The Supplement Takeover” and make it a thing. Give your goals personality, and they’ll be easier to stick with.
Pharmacy Growth Trick 3 – Find Your Pharmacy Owner Support System
Running a pharmacy is NOT a solo sport. If you’re trying to hit big goals in 2025, you need support.
Think about it—how many times have you tried something new (marketing, cash-based revenue streams, clinical services) and given up because no one held you accountable?
That’s why community is everything. Whether it’s a mastermind group, a pharmacy business coach (ahem, DiversifyRx, anyone?), or just a few like-minded owners to check in with—having people to share wins, troubleshoot challenges, and push you forward will make all the difference.
Not sure where to start?
Join our pharmacy owner’s Facebook group, get into a coaching program, or find a mentor who’s been there. Just don’t try to do it all alone.
Pharmacy Growth Trick 4 – Stretch, Don’t Snap
“Go big or go home” sounds great—until it leads to burnout and frustration.
Too many pharmacy owners set massive, unrealistic goals that backfire. If you currently fill 500 scripts a day, saying, “I want to hit 1,500 scripts daily by June” is a recipe for disappointment.
A better approach? Stretch yourself without snapping. Take what you’re currently doing and increase it by 10-20% at a time.
- If your goal is to grow your med sync program, don’t aim to add 500 patients overnight. Start with 2 a day, then 5 a day, and so on.
- If you want to build out functional medicine services, begin with one new offering (like hormone testing) before launching everything at once.
Small, sustainable growth beats unrealistic moonshot goals every time.
